We currently employ one member of staff and have around 35 volunteers who are committed to making the station the best it can be, to keep you entertained and informed 24/7.
Staff
Simon Abberley – Sustainability & Development Manager
Simon is the Sustainability Manager at the station and also hosts the Breakfast Show Monday to Friday (he now regrets telling us he doesn’t mind getting up early). When he’s not working, you can find him on the local DJ scene, doing geeky things with his phone, reading the manual of things we think we may have broken at the station and messing around on his mixing desks. Eileen Ross- Director/Presenter
Eileen has been volunteering at Nevis Radio for over two decades and now hosts the “Rock Off” on Friday nights. She is a very proud granny, has three lovely children and loves music, reading and everything outdoorsy. Eileen says the phrase “act your age not your shoe size” is nonsense and has no intent of doing so! eileen@nevisradio.co.uk
Ian Langley- Director/Presenter
Ian Langley moved to Lochaber with his late wife Irene from Devon and joined the team early in 2017 with his Sunday Swing Session between 7 and 9pm. Ian is a Kentish Man, having been born West of the River Medway, and has since lived in many different parts of the UK before finally moving to Scotland with his Management Consultancy business . Ian has also served with 3 Fire Brigades in UK and did 17 years’ service with HM Coastguard. In Lochaber Ian is involved with the Royal British Legion Scotland Branch, Community Rail Partnership, Lochaber Town Pipe Band, The Men’s Shed, Glenfinnan Station Museum, Cruise Ship Visits and still supplies Free Range Eggs from the end of the driveway to his home in memory of Irene who started their ‘Rescue-Hen’ egg enterprise when they first arrived in Lochaber. ian@nevisradio.co.uk
Sean McCartney – Director/Presenter
Sean originally joined the station back in March 2000 in his early teens following as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award and loved it so much he stayed before leaving in 2010. He couldn’t stay away and in 2017, he returned. Behind the scenes he looks after our technical side in the station as well as annoying the presenters with implementing new technology within the studio’s. You can hear him in the mix on Saturday nights from 8-10pm as well as hosting Scotland’s Big Night In across Scotland’s local radio stations. sean@nevisradio.co.uk
Head Of Music
John Weller- Head of Music/Presenter
John is a self-employed builder and child of the sixties. John holds the role of Head of Music at Nevis Radio as well as being a presenter where he presents Drive Time twice a week and co-hosts the Country Show on Wednesday evenings with his wife Pam. He also presents four hours of great music released before the year 2000 on Saturday mornings. Aside from loving many kinds of music, his passions include 10 pin bowling, live gigs and photography. In his spare time, he helps organise the annual Lochaber Agricultural Show, and organising the ten pin bowling leagues at the Nevis Centre. Presenters
Mick Welch
Mick’s spent much of his working life driving big vehicles even bigger distances but now works in the beautiful Glen Nevis, which luckily for us means he can volunteer at Nevis Radio. He loves the music of the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s but isn’t afraid of a chart hit or two and always game for requests.
Lachie Mor
Lachie can remember the days of black and white television and only one channel, and is one of the longest serving volunteers at the station. He puts his love of the radio and music down to not being allowed to stay up with the grown-ups, so resorted to the solid state transistor radio under his pillow. He would describe his show “The Hoolie” as one that breaks most musical barriers, playing an eclectic mixture that embraces all sorts of music and has been referred as a sort of Twilight Zone meets the Old Grey Whistle Test but never old and never grey.
Pam Weller
Pam better known as Mrs W – the better half of John Weller is the producer and artistic director for Country Trax on Wednesday evenings from 7 – 9. Country Trax brings you the latest in country music from here in the UK all the way to Nashville and beyond. She is a formidable ten pin bowler and gives them all a run for their money down at the Nevis Centre or anywhere she hurls her balls.
Jo Cowan
Proud highland girl Jo has been involved in Nevis Radio since its humble beginning back in the 90’s and is always keen to help in any way she can- from chairing meetings to cleaning the toilets. When she’s not presenting the Americana show on a Wednesday or at work, she can be found curling, jogging unconvincingly, drinking good red wine or having a blether.
John the Prof
Nevis Radio legend, John the Prof is well known in the Traditional Scottish circles. As a performing fiddle player, compare and a member of Nairn & District Pipe Band – John knows good highland music! Now retired from his life-long work with the Scottish Ambulance Service, John has time to provide us with ceilidh show “The Highland Fling” every fortnight.
Chris Millard
Chris and his family moved to the Fort William area from South London in 2006. He has an eclectic taste in music, is a keen vinyl (mainly limited edition) collector, and likes to attend live gigs as much as possible. For fun, Chris is an amateur photographer, enjoys a good Kentucky Bourbon and is learning to play the banjo.
Ian Hamilton
Ian is a minister of the Church of Scotland, a musician (piano and organ) a writer and a broadcaster. He was educated at the University of Glasgow and Trinity College and The London College of Music. For several years he presented his own music show on Moray Firth Radio when he was based at Nairn Old Parish Church and also he contributed regularly to “Reflections” on Grampian Television. In addition he regularly writes the “Manse Window” feature for the “People’s Friend” magazine. He thoroughly enjoys compiling and producing his “Sunday Serenade” music show for Nevis Radio, which is made up of a wide variety of music and song including Scottish, show tunes, film music, light classical, spirituals and easy listening.
Becky Drinkwater
Becky began presenting the Wednesday Afternoon Show in February 2021, after appearing on regular guest features on Ed Cullum’s show. Becky grew up in Fort Augustus, and now lives on a croft in Acharacle. She works for local charity Ewen’s Room, raising awareness about their work, and also local Sunart Community Company. Becky is passionate about wellbeing, mental health, and all things outdoorsy. This is reflected in her weekly feature on the afternoon show – ‘Wellbeing Wednesdays’ – where she interviews guests on the show, all about topics related to mental health and wellbeing. Neil MacLeod AKA Oliver Sudden
A bit of a Burrach in its early days was called a “Bit of Fun”. Oliver was ably assisted by Justin Case and his son CD, Rhoddy Dendron the local gardener and the French explorer Toloose Le trek! It changed its name to a Bit of a Burrach to cover the odd mistake and the huge range of music played, from blues to drum and bass. The programme was once described as adventurous, brilliant, clever, discerning, eventful, fun, glam, hungry, (I think that’s enough – Ed!) Curious? You should tune in for the piece on the half hour. For example Oliver’s weekly thought. “Latest survey shows that 3 out of 4 people make up 75% of the world’s population.” He looks forward to your company.
Viv Macdonald
Viv finds herself surprised and delighted each time she is on the radio. Doing a techie spot about all aspects of digital technology and other time playing music while wittering suits her very well.
Isabel Campbell
The most senior presenter on Nevis Radio, Belle is celebrating many years of voluntary service to the station. She likes all kinds of music especially Scottish, Gaelic, Country and is a fan of the Sixties. She is well known in the community and brings laughter to many situations. Some of Belle’s happiest moments have been doing outside broadcasts at agricultural shows and school fun days. She likes meeting people and makes everyone welcome.
Brad Cain
Brad has been living in Mallaig since 2014, where he is a harvest technician for MOWI. Originally from Manchester, he has a broad taste in music, which includes many bands from independent, not-for-profit labels. Back at Nevis Radio for a second time with his trademark Soundtrack to Infinity show from 10pm on Wednesday evenings, Brad is looking forward to adding some live performances to his shows, now that the radio station has the new MOWI Live Lounge facility. In his home life, Brad’s family comprises of one unruly teenage daughter, two dogs, a cat and a snake, and he enjoys time out bothying, camping and generally connecting with nature any way he can. Brad also serves as a retained firefighter for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
Linda Campbell
Linda has produced and presented on Nevis Radio for over 20 years and is always ready to cover for other presenters. Linda likes all kinds of music. One of her memorable outside broadcasts was covering the Upper Achintore Primary School Fun day when she was told she had to take part in an assault course, being not a sporty person but willing to do anything for a laugh she did and got stuck under a camouflage net!!
Hal
Hal’s alias is “Howdo Bean”. Bean’s a musician who plays acoustic music, usually very chilled out tunes. People always ask about what music Bean is into, to which the reply is Drum and Bass. Bean may play soft and emotional music but its all about the bass for Bean! Bean loves meeting new people and hearing their stories. Sparky (Mark MacKenzie) is Bean’s companion and friend in life, they love to explore nature and have a joke together. Sparky may appear and co-host on they Friday evening 7-9 show every now and then too.
Neil (Neebs) McNeill
“Neebs” was born in 1981 in the fabulous Scottish Highlands. He has travelled the globe partying and DJing house and techno music. Mainly going to large festivals and clubs always up for it. Neebs was lucky enough to have a friend (MHG) to stay with in Holland and Berlin for a number of years and helped him build up a great knowledge in house and techno of all aspects. Now he is most comfortable just chilling out & most of all making and mixing music of all kinds.
